Position Description:

We are a nonpartisan high-impact group of students committed to protecting democratic representation through institutional reforms. We achieve this by targeted initiatives and education campaigns about emerging threats to our democracy. Our approach integrates legislative research, community advocacy, and strategic alliances to foster a more liberally democratic future.

We are inviting someone to join our team as the Director of the Communications Division (who also serves as the organization’s Press Secretary). This role involves leading our digital presence, writing, and media relations teams. You will play a pivotal role in molding public perception of the Task Force and shaping the narrative around us. We’re inviting candidates with a passion for strategic communications, democracy protection, and working in the nonprofit sector.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Recruit, build, and lead the following teams within the Communications Division:
    • Digital Presence: Grows and maintains our presence on our website and social media (primarily Instagram and LinkedIn).
    • Media Production: Includes graphic design, photography, and video production, this team captures moments at Task Force events, creates advertisements to bolster support for our initiatives, and creates a compelling message for why youth should help us to defend democracy.
    • Press Relations: Ensures local/national press outlets are covering our initiatives. Provides interviews to media outlets and cultivates/manages relations with them.
  • Craft and execute comprehensive communications strategies that align with and propel our communications objectives.
  • Serve as the Task Force’s Press Secretary, acting as the chief spokesperson and liaison with the media, ensuring our messaging is precise and consistent with our narrative.
  • Monitor media coverage about democracy related issues, analyzing and adapting strategies based on media trends and coverage.

Requirements:

  • Majoring in Communications, Journalism, Public Relations, Political Science, or a related field.
  • Experience in leadership with political organizations, advocacy, or similar settings.
  • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills, adept at crafting messages for varied audiences.
  • Media relations expertise and a well-established network of media contacts (or willing to establish a network).
  • Grasp of contemporary political and policy matters at all levels.
  • Ability to maintain composure under pressure from press questions.
  • Proficiency with communications technologies, including media monitoring tools, social media platforms, and content management systems.
